Blog 1. Effective communication

The purpose of communication is to get your message across to others clearly and unambiguously. Communication is only successful when both the sender and the receiver understand the same information as a result of the communication.

The biggest problem for me is I always could not successfully communicate with others when I feel nervous. I don’t like fight it out at all whenever others disagree with me. However, it is not appropriate for my future. Take care about other’s feeling is important, but express my own feeling is also important. I am always prepared to make concessions when there exists disagreement just because I am afraid I may hurt others feelings when I telling the truth.

I believe there are a lot of factors could affect the quality of communication: facial expression, body language, use of words, suitable eye contact and etc. I want learn how to successfully interact and exchange opinion with others without hurting others feeling in this module. My dear teacher and classmates, hope you could help me. :)

What’s more, I believe it is quite important for us to made communication not only right but also effective. In my opinion, effective means use lesser words and obtain a greater impact. This is quite important for us especially when we go to work. Hope I could gain enough knowledge and skills from this communication course at the end of semester.

Practice makes perfect! I believe I could improve a lot by the help of my friendly classmates and nice teacher. (^.^)//

  2. Honey, you have already made a good example of effective communication in this blog. The way you express your opinion is very appropriate. I also realized that facial expression and body language would affect the quality of communication. Haha, the TV series 'Lie to me' occured to me when I read your blog.

There is so much we need to learn and pay attention to. Let's work hard together!

  3. Hi Kitty! Firstly thank you for reading my blog and leaving comments, really appreicate it =)

As i read your blog, it kind of reminded me of my previous encounters where I too have conflicts between having to convey my ideas against having to take care of other people's feelings...

Nonetheless, would like to share with you another perspective on this issue. I think honesty is utmost important, especially in relationships and worklife. Well i strongly believe that those who always tells you about beautiful things may be good friends but it is those who have the courage to tell you the ugly truths such as where you can improve or what you have done wrong can be deemed as your true close friends who truly wants you to improve.

It is hard to bring across messages especially when they are hurtful. But with the use of approriate words , it will definitely mitigate the situation by tons. Most importantly, if you speak your words with sincerity and good will, I'm sure no matter how ugly the message may be, your friend or your colleagues or even your loved ones will be able to sense your intentions and receive the message well.

    My two cents worth...

  4. Hey there Kitty,

I share the same problem. I always feel nervous having to speak in front of a crowd. I would like to share with you a little secret of mine to overcome this problem. It helps to know the subject that you have to present well. It does not mean memorising your speech but to know the gist of it. That way, you'll feel more confident and can be more spontaneous when you deliver your speech. Besides that, I also find it useful to engage different audience using different approaches. The way you communicate should appeal to your target audience. I would normally try to engage them whenever I'm giving a speech. This way, I feel like I am actually talking to my friends instead.

  5. Hi Kitty. From what you have mentioned in your blog, I guess you are the compromiser when it comes to solving conflict? Yes I agree being sensitive to others is crucial but able to speak assertively is also one of the many problems faced by Asians. I believe because most Asian countries are less individualistic and therefore we tend to use the "face-saving" approach whenever there's a conflict. But we still need to be firm in our communication for our rights! So how can we strike a balance between assertiveness and sensitivity?
Because I do find myself " self-censor" a lot of the things I want to say and eventually I find it difficult to communicate. To talk or not to talk, that is the question! Do you feel that way too?
